Tony y Not has released her new EP, ‘Your Exile In My Mind’, marking her debut on Live At Robert Johnson.
The three-tracker comprises of cuts she’s played in her DJ sets over the past 12 months, each with its own unique touches whilst tied together by hypnotic, upbeat and dark tones.
Opener titular track ‘Your Exile In My Mind’ is a contemporary twist on the late-seventies euro-disco sounds, with follow-up ‘The War Is Over But The Fight Goes On’ entering darker territories. Transporting listeners to reminisce those early-morning dancefloor moments, its driving beat give way to finale ‘Full Circle’.
To close the EP, ‘Full Circle’ takes a dreamier and cosmic-like approach as it spirals across its six-minute timespan.
“This EP was written in a time when things were not going as planned for the world,” Tony y Not tells Mixmag. “Music is an anchor and now that life is working smoothly again, this EP is for everyone to hold onto something when the outer world seems like chaos but the individual can find stability within.”
She continues by contextualising each track’s name: “All three tracks are about the consequences of hardship in life that keep living as an Exile In the Mind and even when The War Is Over, The Fight Goes On internally but eventually things are coming Full Circle.”
Tony y Not is a DJ and producer and mental health advocate. Keen to cement the importance of self-love and compassion, her dreamlike influences from her native Germany and now-base of New York translate these values sonically through a heartfelt selection of funky build-ups, dark synth waves and acid-infused disco.
With a yearning to ensure crowds are smiling, looking forward and not taking themselves too seriously, ‘Your Exile In My Mind”s exploitative nature is a body of work which cements those ideals further.
